Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual behavior, which could be expected to make a person feel offended, humiliated or intimidated. It can be physical, verbal or written.
Sexual harassment is covered in the workplace when it happens:
- at work
- at work-related events
- between people sharing the same workplace
- between colleagues outside of work.
Act of Sexual Harassment
Here are some examples of sexual harassment in the workplace and
information on how to handle it if you have been harassed at work.These are few examples but they are not limited to remember any act which makes you uncomfortable falls under sexual harassment category.
- Sharing sexually inappropriate images or videos, such as pornography, with co-workers
- Sending suggestive letters, notes, or e-mails
- Displaying inappropriate sexual images or posters in the workplace
- Telling lewd jokes, or sharing sexual anecdotes
- Making inappropriate sexual gestures
- Staring in a sexually suggestive or offensive manner, or whistling
- Making sexual comments about appearance, clothing, or body parts
- Inappropriate touching, including pinching, patting, rubbing, or purposefully brushing up against another person
- Asking sexual questions, such as questions about someone's sexual history or their sexual orientation
- Making offensive comments about someone's sexual orientation or gender identity
What is Workplace
A workplace covers any place that a person attends for the purpose of
carrying out their work or trade. They do not need to be an employer or
employee of the workplace.For eg. if A goes to
B's office to attend a meeting and in B's place someone misbehave with her then B's office also comes under the definition of workplace.
What to do when you become a victim of Sexual Harassment At Workplace
- confront the harasser SAY NO LOUD AND CLEAR
- If event continues despite of being told to stop Write down date,time , chain of events,witness name if any.
- Write complain to internal Sexual Harassment complaint Committee/mechanism if there is no such committee then either you can approach court or file police complain against the harasser as ultimately harasser act falls under various IPC section like an act outraging women modesty etc.
Finally, you have to become strong mentally as
there will be pressure from many side to withdraw the complain but
ultimately you have to decide as in what you want.
